2000 Dodge Ram check gages

The check gages came on then off and I checked the temp gage, it was all the way up so I turned the heater on and the temp came down. What does this mean?

When this happened, were you driving in town or on the highway? As far as the heater, it acts like an additional (small) radiator and will help cool the engine when used.
