Noises problem
1999 Dodge Ram V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 123k miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I was off-roading in my truck and hit the buttom of a mud pit pretty hard, now whenever I put my truck into four-wheel drive it says it's engaged but it doesnt feel like it and when you make a tight turn in four-wheel drive you can tell because it doesnt turn that tight, now whenever I make a tight turn with four-wheel drive engaged it makes a loud clanking or clicking noise. Now this is un-related to the off-roading incident. Whenever I accelarate it makes a loud clicking or clanking noise also, but this has been doing that long before I went off-roading. So, for the four-wheeling incident do you think I broke my barrings? and do you have any idea to what my other problem is?

Ok I have the same problem with the four wheel drive sometimes also in my 1997 Ram when you put it into four wheel drive try backing up a few feet and see what that does. I go wheeling alot in my truck too. The other problem with the clicking and banging noise sounds like a universal joint on one of the front axles i have the same thing also i replaced them both though not that bad of a job. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I had a buddy look at my u-joint while i drove and turned toward him slowly, he said it looked like they were rubbing together. So, I'm guessing I just smashed them closer together then they should be when I hit thr buttom of a mud pit pretty hard that knocked of my license plate. About how much are U-joints for a '99 dodge ram 1500?

I believe they are around 20-30 bucks get the heavy duty version though they are worth it. They may be cheaper tho I can't remember.

Thank you very much. Now I doubt you have the time to type out a step by step instruction on how to replace U-joints for a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500, but any chance you know of any book store(Boreders, Barnes and Noble, ect.) or any webpages with a service and repair manual or anything like that?
