Heater problem
1999 Dodge Ram V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi, the heater on my truck doesn't seam to be working properly. There are 4 settings for the output from the fan, and 1 (low) through 3 will give me warm air, but not hot, and not really enough. The 4th, or 'hi' setting feels like it is almost blowing cool air, especially when 'defrost' is selected.

The temp gauge is running between 1/4 and 1/2, so it's warmed up. Also, I have placed cardboard in the grill in hopes that it might help, but it hasn't really. It is -40 with wind chill here right now, so it is pretty cold in the truck. It was like this before it got nasty cold as well. I've tried idling the truck for 30 minutes or so, as well as driving it all day and no real change.

Any suggestions?

The first thing to do is to check your coolant level. This is the easiest, and more common reason for heater malfunction.

If coolant level is checked good, and engine temperature level is operating normally, I would suspect clogged or faulty heater core. Feel the 2 hoses under hood to ensure they are warm. If only one is warm, this indicates clogged heater core.
