Hello,
A faulty idle control valve would give you this condition, if that was the case you would also have the check engine light on and most likely wouldn't be running the smoothest. Having it scanned at your local parts store to see what codes are present is a good start as there are a few things that could be wrong. If you're not close to a place to get a scan then doing a hard reset and clean the throttle body would be a good idea. Get a, spray can of carburetor/injector cleaner and with the car running and the air cleaner intake boot off spray down the throttle body. Someone will need to be in the car keeping it running by pressing the gas pedal as it will want to stall out and spray all around be generous with the spraying. Then after you've done that look in it you want to get any black carbon build up to be removed with the cleaner check behind the butterfly plate inside it too when it's not running by pressing the gas pedal all the way to the floor opening up the port. Clean all in there best you can. Then once your feeling ok about it cleaned best you could then disconnect both battery cables from the battery as if to be removing 5he battery and short the 2 cables to each other for about 30 seconds, this will erase the code memory in the computer resetting the system. Then reconnect the battery make sure you putt the air cleaner intake boot back on and everything is back hooked up and normal. Then start the car and go for a test drive. If the engine light comes on again seek out a scanner and retrieve the new code and let me know what it is.
Ii look forward to hearing back with what happens.
Let me know how it goes.
Tom
