I just bought this 1999 dodge ram 1500 it has 40,000 miles on it. It has v8 5.2L motor with an automatic trans. What could be some of the causes of engine pinging or knocking under a load. If i use higher grade fuel it does not ping.

That is a common problem. If the higher octane fuel fixes the problem, that is what I would suggest. IF it doesn't, have the knock sensor checked.
