We have a 97 Dodge Ram 5.9 engine automatic transmission. Whenever we shift into reverse it starts sputtering and stalls it idles at about 600 rpm when in park. We believe the cause of it of the sputtering and dying is low rpm? I believe specs say it should idle between 700-750 could anything else be causing this?

Has the check engine light come on? Have you checked for vacuum leaks on the engine?

Let me know.

Have not checked anything yet. No lights come on. It just starts acting like it is not getting fuel and dies. Restarts fine and you have to really hit the gas pedel if you put it in reverse.

Okay, if you haven't started, check for vacuum leaks and I would recommend checking fuel pump pressure. Here is a how to for checking:

Let me know what you find.
