does four wheel drive light have to be on for the four wheel drive to work? Does having a lift kit installed affect the four wheel drive?

The 4 wheel drive does not have to be on. If it is not there could either be a problem in the actuator or just the light indicator switch. A lift kit can effect your 4 wheel drive, which can depend on quite a few things.
