1995 Dodge Ram hard shift from 2 to 4 wheel drive

Transmission problem
1995 Dodge Ram V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

The shifter is very stiff, i can pull it into 4 wheel drive but it is hard and then it makes a cluncking sound when it changes gears

Does it happen under all conditions? If you have the engine under a load, it can be considered normal, but if you shift when stopped, it shouldn't do it.
