Engine Mechanical problem
1992 Dodge Ram 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual

Dodge Ram 250 with a 318 runs rich, black exhaust smoke and won't idle. New O2 sensor, fuel pressure regualtor, plugs, wires, distributor. And other items. Would the "timing" being off cause this or could the distributor have been put on wrong? Also, would the EGR valve cause this problem?

High fuel pressure or a bad injector is more likely to cause this and the plugs and o2 must be cleaned after it is fixed. The engine timing is not usually the cause and if it has two injectors and the Map sensor is ok and has good vacuum that may be what is wrong. An injector may be leaking through its valve too much. Actually yes, the EGR could drive it rich.
Use a good gauge and scanner to look at the fuel system, engine temp. When hot, and its fuel pressure with either multi or throttle body injection. It is old. Was the chain ever replaced, if vacuum is poor this also will occur. Tough nut those were. What codes and what fuel pressure and fuel system? Mileage?
