One rainy day my truck failed to start. A day or so later it fired right up. I thought it might be getting sensitive to moisture. Another rainy day it fired and ran normally. Then on a day without rain it failed to fire, and again the next day it fired.

One two occassions I tried starting fluid with no results. The plugs and wires are less than a year old. I get power to the coil + with the key off, and power to the coil - with the key on, but I still think the problem is ignition.

When it fires it fires as it always did, and the engine is strong. Any ideas or suggestions where to begin.

Welcome to the forum, there shouldn't be any voltage to coil with key off, that voltage comes from asd relay. When there is voltage on the positive side, there should be steady voltage on the negative side as well, without engine cranking. Take negative primary wire loose from coil, do you have voltage on both primary circuits, now? With testlite on negative side side of coil, engine cranking, the lite should pulse.

Are there any trouble codes? You should be able to get mil codes by cycling the ignition switch. You turn key till dash lites come on, no further. Cycle key, on--off, on--off, on, then the the check engine lite starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. Your lookin for two digit codes.

Quick observation: I'll bet he had the test light "grounded" on the battery positive post. I doubt there was voltage on the coil with the ignition switch off. If there was, he'd be discussing a battery drain. I've mistakenly grounded my meter or test light on the positive post before, . . . and we all know what an expert I am! :)

Hi caradiodoc, I seen you around, you give good information. I've hooked things up the wrong way, so many times, I lost count. Have a good day.
