The place where l take my car to have seviced keeps telling me that my rear differential fluid looks really bad n needs to be changed. My car only has 12000 miles on it could this be possible?

The recommend maintenance much higer. If it is that dirty, I recommend having a dealer check it. If it is that dirty already, that is a concern.
