2003 Dodge Neon temp fluctuation

sometimes the temp gauge fluctates I have had the thermaste replaced 2 times and it still fluctuates briefly. then falls back down it doesnt leak fluid. I have been told it could be a head casket problem. but the engine doesnt run rough or make noises like its a head casket. it has overheated one time. but usually doesnt over heat

I would check the sensor and it s connector
you can use a scanner to check if its the gauge or the sending unit
