I am not a mechanic, but since my car has over 100,000 miles on it. I'm aware that it will have more problems, the speedometer is not working. It was working fine until I brought it into a repair shop and did not notice it until I drove home after picking it up from the shop. A friend of mine is a mechanic and if I want him to fix it how much does it usually cost?

Speedometer gets signal from the vehicle speed sensor on top of the transmission. 0.5 hour labor plus part.

What was done at the repair shop?

I took my car to one repair shop because my battery died, after they ran diags on it they neglected to tell me that it was my alternator and quoted me an outrageous price to repair it. So I contacted another shop that quoted me half to replace the alternator & battery. So I don't know if the speedometer stopped working when I took it to the first shop or the second place. But all I know is when I picked up my car from the second mechanic, the speedometer stopped working.

Have your friend look at he vehicle speed sensor connector on top the transmission. Just him $20 and a 6-pack. He should be OK.
