I bought my car about 3 months ago. It is a 2002 Dodge Neon SE with about 70,000 miles. I have recently started hearing a knocking noise first thing in the mornings when I start it up. It gets worse if I push the gas pedal. It only does it first thing in the morning when it is cold outside. No warning lights are coming on. I've also noticed that the car seems to "surge" while driving it. I don't know if the problems are related or not. Any ideas?

Where is this noise coming from is it on the upper or lower portion of the engine-if its upper could be you have a lifter leak down problem-lower engine bearings
