2002 Dodge Neon down shift "clunk " ?

Transmission problem
2002 Dodge Neon 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 60xxx miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
when slowing down and the tranny shifts from 2nd down into 1st I get a hard "clunk " .
fluid level ok . anyone ???

I would raise the vehicle, put on stands. Grasp tires and check vertical and horizontal movement (there should not be any). If OK, then remove wheel and inspect brakes, also inspect CV axles, making sure they are seated properly.
If you have any movement in wheel, check ball joints, struts, bearings, outer tierods and bushings.

Also inspect the motor mounts, looking for loose bolts, or torn/collapsed rubber.
