2001 Dodge Neon knocking and smoke come out from underneath

2001 Dodge Neon 4 cyl Automatic 155000 miles

i noticed my car started to knock alittle this morning while i ran into the store. by the time i came outside it was knocking really hard and a little smoke was coming out from the hood. the oil is fine.. i had no service lights on..
