2001 Dodge Neon Car backfire and no brakes

The car backfires and sputters and surges up and down and the brake pedal is hard to push down.

Hi:
It sounds like there is a vacuum leak at the brake booster. It is located behind the master cylender. There is a large vacuum hose going to it from the engine. If the hose is good, have the booster vacum tested. This problem will cause a backfire and loss of power assist for the brakes.
