What to check next

Diagnostic guidance. Suggested checks and possible repairs are separate from the owner's reported results.

Have the cooling system tested using the specified procedure and trace the oil leak to its actual source. Stop safely and arrange recovery if there is overheating, an oil-pressure warning or rapid fluid loss.

2CarPros editorial correction - October 12, 2026

Unrelated replies that had entered this discussion have been removed. This thread concerns coolant and engine-oil leaks on a 1998 Dodge Neon.

Oil collecting near the engine/transmission joint does not, by itself, prove that the rear main seal is leaking. Have the leak traced to its actual source before authorizing seal replacement. The continued leak after oil-pan-gasket replacement does not establish which other component failed.

Have the cooling system inspected and pressure-tested using the vehicle's specified procedure and test pressure. A water-pump failure was suggested but not confirmed. Never open a coolant pressure cap while the system is hot or pressurized.

If the vehicle is overheating, has an oil-pressure warning, or is losing fluid rapidly, stop safely, shut the engine off and arrange recovery rather than driving it to locate the leak.

No completed repair or confirmed leak source was reported by the original owner.

To find the coolant leak, what you have to do is pressure test the cooling system for whatever time it takes to see the leak and follow it to it's source.
As far as the oil leak is concerned, the oil pan is only one of dozens of places a car can leak oil and they usually leak in more that one place. Oil runs downhill and it is blown back. For this reason you have to find the highest point that you find oil and repair that leak first. clean the engine and drive it to look for more leaks.

Discussion summary

1998 dodge neon anit freeze and oil leak

A 1998 Dodge Neon developed coolant and oil leaks. Replacing the oil-pan gasket did not stop the oil leak. The remaining relevant advice calls for locating each leak before choosing further repairs.

Reported outcome: No confirmed leak source or completed repair was reported.

Unrelated replies were removed during editorial cleanup. Oil near the engine/transmission joint does not itself establish a rear-main-seal leak, and a water-pump failure was not confirmed.
