Check Engine - 1997 Dodge Ram

Hi, new user with some questions.

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 V6 Magnum. 137,395 miles. Since the great state of California requires the autos to be smogged (ugh) I'm in a dilemma. The Check Engine light has been on for awhile.

The truck has been running fine. Here's what I'm wondering:

The previous owner put in a K&N air filter. I got a cleaning/oiling kit and cleaned it shortly after the light went on. I have seen on the 'net that these filters can cause problems. Is that anyone's experience? Should I go to the junk yard and replace this thing with a Dodge air filter assembly?

Wondering if too I should change the plugs. When I got the truck it has 112,335 miles on it. I just don't know if there is a trick to getting to the plugs in the back of the engine (it looks cramped back there).

Oh, one last thing. A few months before I started getting the CEL, the battery came loose and broke open. Acid all over. I cleaned the engine and took it to a garage, as the belts needed replacing. It ran without the light coming on for months, so I don't know if that's related. The mechanic checked it all at the time and no problems.

HELP!

Hey d,
First and foremost I would need the code# and its description. You can get a free scan at most major auto parts chains. Get back to me w/ the info and I can help ya more!

Hi Chris,

I sent you an e-mail. Here's the info on it:

The diagnostic code I got was P0138 which is "O2 Sensor High Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 2)". Also, my "HC (PPM)" Measure is 102. The mechaninc said it should be 100.

I know a little bit about cars and truch and can probably do this myself. If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate it!

Thanks,

David
