2005 Dodge Magnum hesitation when accelerating at speed

not sure if this is transmission, engine or fuel system related. Problem: when gradually but firmly accelerating from 30+ mph there is a noise and hesitation as if the transmission wants to down shift but doesn't. If you accelerate hard the downshift happens normally. This car has a tiptronic mode and if shifting using the "manual" option performance seems fine.
