Good observation about the fan. One thing the gauges and fan have in common is the ignition switch. I haven't worked on anything this new, but in the mid to late 1990s, there was a lot of trouble with ignition switches. They develop burned contacts and overheated terminals in the connector, especially if you're in the habit of using the heater fan on high a lot.
Next time this occurs, irritate the ignition switch a little to see if it clears up. If it does, it's time for a new switch. If it doesn't, it still could be the wires in the connector. On the 90s cars and minivans, this problem also affected the radio and power windows. The engine power is on a different circuit so the engine does not shut off.
