2003 Dodge Intrepid Coolant and the engine

Hello. I'm in a dilemma with our 2003 Dodge Intrepid. The oil lamp started to light up on the dashboard. Coolant was also leaking and we took our car to a mechanic. At first, the mechanic said the thermostat and the gasket needed changing. After doing a pressure test through the coolant container, he pointed out how air was coming out of the engine through the top of the engine where the oil is deposited. In summary, there's a faulty head gasket and oil is mixing with the coolant. Is there any way around fixing this without replacing the engine?

Did the garage recommend putting another engine in it?

The Head Gasket can be fixed, it is just a matter of how far it was driven after it overheated as to whether or not the Heads may be warped an need to be replaced. Also depending on how far it was driven as to whether or not there may be internal engine damage such as engine bearings and piston rings.

Also some garages will replace an engine cheaper than replacing a head gasket.

The cost of replacing a head gasket can cost as much as $2500+ depending on what they find once started and difficulties with removal.

The cost for an engine will cost about the same maybe $500 more.
