Engine Performance problem

my car wouldnt start, ihad a mechanic friend replace starter, it still wont start, he said what ever it is broke the old starter so it needed to be replaced anyway but when he tried to start it before the new starter it wouldnt turn over, now it turns over with new starter but wont catch? what could it be?
