With the heater or air conditioning on, the air flow will intermittantly switch between the vents and the bottom, with the switch set to vent.

Does this seem to happen when the engine is under a load? To me it sounds like a vacuum leak in the system. The control panal receives vacuum from the engine and then distributes it to different locations based on your needs. If there is a leak, there isn't enough vacuum to keep a switch where it belongs thus it changes direction.

Now, it could be the switch or a bad hose. Check for leaks to the vac hoses (listen for leaks... hissing). Most common areas include near the firewall and under the hood. They use plast hose for routing and it can melt.

If you can't find a leak, you may want to remove the switch and have it checked for a leak.

If it happens under a load, you have about a 99% chance it's a vacuum leak.
