This morning after putting my car into drive it shifted hard as I proceeded to drive the car rpms tacked over 3 and wouldn't shift. I immediately drove it home. This car has a slap shift and the gears showed it was at “2" which it usually starts at “1" and it wouldn’t go up or down. Is the transmission gone and do you know if this is going to be an expensive fix? Is this something that has to be done at the dealer?

I do not know what you mean by "slap" shifter. Do you mean shifter is in columb or between the seats? It sounds like it may be something in the linkage

The shifter is between the seats. It's almost like a manual without the clutch. I read somewhere that the transmission goes into a "limp mode" whatever that means.

Ok I know what you mean and you have one of the first cars with this system. I have heard they had troubles with the system when in "manual mode" I believe this system is all electronic. Limp in mode will drop you to second gear and wount let you drive in anything else but reverse. It is likely an electronic bug in the system.
