If you find a speedometer cable, a lot of people would like to see it!
Since you didn't say what the problem is, I would assume the speedometer stays on "0". The possible causes are loose connector pins on the back of the instrument cluster, a defective cluster or wiring, or a problem with the transmission computer. There is a test procedure to determine the cause of a dead speedometer.
There is an input speed sensor and an output speed sensor that feed information to the transmission computer. I believe if one of them is defective, the transmission won't shift out of second gear, so if it shifts ok, don't suspect a sensor problem.
