My car's check engine light came on. The car runs fine, uses a little more fuel than it used to but it has new plugs, wires and air filter. Upon hooking it to a scanner the code is po401 then it says egr flow insufficient. Is this a bad egr valve? Or just a clogged line or what? I don't want to just start replacing parts. I'd like to know the exact problem and then the fix. Any help would greatly be appericated!

Hi:
I can't say exactly but I would check to see if the egr valve is sticking partially closed. Also, I have seen carbon build up that causes this problem. You may want to remove it and check.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

On the 1996 intrepid the egr valve is on the back of the right side head with very little room to get to it is there a way to test this or should I just go ahead and remove and clean it? Also is this the only place where carbon will be? Thanx.
