My son has our old 1995 Dodge Intrepid. The gauges work every now and then. Car seems to run great with this exception. Used to be able to turn off and on several times to get the gauges to kick in. That trick doesn't work anymore. When gauges don't work, car won't shift out of first. Time to say goodbye to the vehicle? Thanks for your advice.

The TCM is located next to the battery on the driverside fenderwell. It controls the transmission and monitors any information from the sensors on the transmission, Including the speedometer which I assume is not working now. When the TCM fails, it kicks the transmission into "safe mode" to allow you to drive it to a shop without causing anymore damage. You should be able to find this used in a salvage yard for about $40. It takes about 15 minutes to disconnect the battery, remove it from the vehicle, remove the plug by loosening the bolt that holds it in, and removing the four long screws that mount the module to the car. Replacing the TCM will effectively eliminate many possibilities to the issue your having and a very good chance of fixing your issue all together.
