The TCM does cause this to happen. You don't have alot of miles for a 96. If a sensor shows something is wrong with the control system or a slipping is sensed, the transaxle controller(TCM) does this to keep any damage from occurring. Check for codes. The operation manual and scan tool are available on this site. Let me know the codes you get, check the fluid and smell it first. Check fuses under hood in power center also. Ok
