Air Conditioning problem
2003 Dodge Durango V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My air conditioner compressor makes a popping noise when the ac is on. What causes the noise? What is the fix? Will I have to replace the compressor?

Is it a clicking sound? If so, that is normal. The clutch cycles on and off. When it clicks on, you will hear click or pop. Open the hood and watch it. You will see when it engages and disengages. See if that is the sound you hear.

Let me know what you find.

Joe, Thanks for the feedback. It is not a clicking noise. I had it checked out and it is definitely the compressor.

The only thing I can think of is a bad bearing in it. Is it still working properly? If I'm correct, then eventually the compressor will lock up and need replaced. If it locks up, you will break the serp belt and see a lot of smoke and smell rubber burning from the belt.
