I tow a 1980 fiberglass bass boat using #2 gear and turn off overdrive. My tach shows rpm doubles over no tow and using the D gear and overdirve. My mileage drops to about 7.5 mpg when towing and in warm weather gets 15 mpg not towing. Is this an indication of trouble in the torque converter, a need for servicing, or normal?

If you are driving at highway speeds, you should not be in second gear. Turn the overdrive off and drive it in "D". If the truck can't shift from second gear, it will run the RPM's high and kill the fuel mileage.

Let me know if you have other questions.
