1999 Dodge Durango Temp Up - Car Off

My husbands Durango has us stumped. The temperature guage will rise to 220 and slightly over and the car shuts off! If we sit for a few minutes and let it cool down, its ok again. It does this without the A/C or heat on. We live in western WA so the tempertures are never very warm.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Has the check engine light come on? Have you checked fuel pump pressure? Also, when it doesn't start, have you checked to see if spark and fuel are getting to the engine?
