my 1999 dodge durango 4x4 slt is loud it sounds like the muffler has a hole what could be the problem

Get a rag wet it with water start the truck and use the rag to block the tail pipe
check exhaust system for leaks
If you just bought the truck
maybe some one had changed the exhaust system and used a load muffler
