My '06 Dakota makes a ticking noise when the engine is cold. Is sounds as if it is originating from the lower part of the motor. As the engine heats up, the noise tends to go away. Not sure if it is an actual engine problem or if it is an exhaust system problem. It started about a year ago on the Driver's side of the engine and just started today on the Passenger side. Thanks in advance for the help

If your not sure exactly where this noise is coming from, a stethoscope or 3 foot extension or long screwdriver can help pinpoint this noise, the lifters are driven by the camshaft, which runs through the center of the engine. The exhaust manifolds(each side) near the pipes are two places to listen for. The lifters are described as a tapping noise, and the exhaust has parts that tick. So I would use some lubricant if the noise is exterior and an oil additive or change might quiet the lifters. At your mileage, I would not get into the engine repair right now, but in the warmer weather, noisey lifters are normal and are a nuisance, but are telling you that work will be necessary.
