2004 Dodge Dakota power steering problem

takes 2 hands to turn left or right and if you let go of wheel it will stay turning won't come back unless you bring it back.had a mechanic tell me power steering pump shaft might be broken.said to take off belt and see if shaft could be pulled in and out pulling on pulley.there is some play back and forth.is this normal or should there be no movement at all.he didn't say how much play.also how easy should it be to spin the pulley

A small amount of play is mormal, around an 1/8 inch.Any more than that and it may have a broken shaft in the pump.
