Engine Performance problem
2000 Dodge Dakota 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

just bought a 2000 dakota 3.9L and changed the oil first thing, problem was i drained the oil and only 3.5 quarts came out , so i put the suggested 4.5 back into the engine and the dip stick said it was a quart to much, the truck was parked on level ground, what would be the problem when it dont leak oil?
the new oil came in a gallon jug(3.76) quarts and i filled the jug back up with the old oil which only filled about 3 quarts full! the dipstick looks like the factory stick that came with the engine

If there's no leak or the engine is not burning it could be a wrong dipstick
