2000 Dodge Dakota noise in 2wheel drive but not in 4 wheel

I had to use 4 wheel drive to get through the snowbank at the end of my street. I only use it in instances like this. I rarely use 4 wheel drive. When I shifted back to 2 wheel drive there is a grinding/whizzing sound from the front end. I got on the highway and accelerated to around 40-50mph there was a "thunk" sound then the noise went away and didn't return till I slowed down. Any ideas what it is?

Because you don't use the 4wd very often, chances are one of the auto hubs. The best thing to do is make sure that you use it more often. If it happens again, put the truck in reverse and back up about 10 feet. That should make it better. Also, consider having the front diff serviced since you have 100K on it as well as the transfer case and rear diff.
