1998 Dodge Dakota 6 cyl Manual 147000 miles

The hot lead to the starter deteriorated and broke, I crimped a new connector on it and hooked it back up. I also purchase a new battery. when i hooked up the leads to the battery, it was sparking and shorting out. is the starter bad?
