You THINK it might be... The the most expensive way to fix a vehicle is by throwing parts at it. If the Check Engine light came on, a diagnostic code has been memorized. That will tell you the circuit or system with the problem.
EGR valves vary in price, and the labor cost to replace one depends on how hard it is to access, what other parts are in the way and must be removed, if any vacuum hoses are old and brittle and must also be replaced, etc. As a guess, I'd expect the valve to be somewhere between $75.00 and $150.00, more if there's an electronic amplifier attached that is part of the assembly. Most reputable shops charge around $75.00 to $100.00 per hour labor, and knowing what they have to do and all the government regulations, I don't know how they can make ends meet charging so little.
They will do what you ask, so if the valve doesn't solve the problem, expect you will still have to pay for them to do as requested. If you let them properly diagnose the problem, it falls on their shoulders if the diagnosis is wrong. They might find something a lot less expensive.
