Just what is a tune-up in 1998.
It really depends on the shop, the year, and the mileage.
A tune-up should include:
An all round safety inspection.
An all round fluid check
Check tires and pressure
Roadtest for vehicle performance before making any changes that are going to improve it. Why tune an engine if the transmission, cooling system, and a backfiring is heard from a valve timing is causing problem? So now if all seems good, you have spent 30 minutes and have evaluated the car or truck and made sure that a tune-up can only make the car run better or as good as it came in, plus it's safe.
If ok, no other work needed, time to tune.
Replace spark plugs, check and replace air and fuel filtetrs, replace pcv valve.
Check and replace wires, cap, and rotor if necessary, and start it up, heat it up, and set or check the timing according to the individual manufacturers spec's.
Most newer cars have no distributor and no timing adjustment necessary. The last step is to hook up a scan tool and check for trouble codes and sometimes timing can be checked and set then.
Now is the time to look over the general condition of the wiring harness, battery, belts and I always clean off the top of the intake or air cleaner housing.
All and any parts or services needed should now be explained to the customer for the future maintenance scheduling.
There she blows. Ok Today a 39.95 tune-up is 4 spark plugs and maybe a pcv valve. Thats it. So you get what you pay for. Good luck to ya. If I missed anything, well it was a busy day as the temp. Change affects a car so much.
