my steering shaft has a u joint in it under the hood that clearly has play in it. can joint be replaced ? is it hooked to upper or lower shaft- or will whole thing have to be replaced as 1 unit.. is this strictly a dealer item?

Easiest way it to get one from a junk yard and swap it out! You will need to put your lock cylinder in it, or have it reprogrammed. It won't start unless you do this!
