Engine Performance problem
1993 Dodge Dakota 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive 150000 miles

my truck has a new fuel pump and filter, plugs wires, and cap and rotor. It usually starts right up and idles well. Other times its hard to start, idles slow then picks up, but always starts to miss, backfire, smoke, loss of power. Cat converter doesnt seem to be plugged either. Im baffled.

What color is the smoke? Does it backfire from the exhaust or intake? Have you checked to make sure it maintains fuel pressure after the engine and key are shut off?

The white smoke tells me you most likely have a bad head gasket. Coolant burns white. You may want to perform a compression test to see if there is a weak cylender.
