1992 Dodge Dakota oil pump?

my little brother had his oil light come on today, and he stopped without checking the oil and added 4 quarts to his engine. seems like it takes a few tries to get started. he said his oil pressure guage shows zero when it's running and it died on him a few times, how do you know it is the oil pump?

Check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge if normal replace the oil pressure switch abnormal could mean the oil pump and with knocking noises engine bearings.
