Noises problem
2006 Dodge Caravan 36000 miles

We bought this minivan used about one year ago and it has worked very well. Just recently, however, the car has started whining or moaning. The sound seems to be worse when the car is first started, especially when it is cold. It seems to change pitch a little when turning or accelerating and usually eventually goes away. It also seems that if you let the car run for awhile before taking off, it's less likely to happen. It seems to be getting worse and happen more frequently now. Other than the noise, it doesn't seem to affect the van's performance at all (i.E, no problems switching gears, turning, accelerating, or braking). What is going on?

Hello -

If you need to get back with us please let us know if your engine is a 4 or 6 cyl and the engine size in liter and the 8th digit of your VIN.

Many times the power steering pump will do this. Have you checked the fluid in the pump for proper level?

Try to narrow it down to a specific component if possible. When you first start it with the hood up, listen for it then slowly turn the steering wheel to the left and to the right to see if the noise gets better, worse, the same or if you hear anything that may indicate the pump.

Does you AC work okay?

You do have a power steering belt that is on a pulley by itself. Start the car and make sure you hear the noise. Remove the belt and start the car... Do you still hear it? That would narrow it to the pump also.
