How can you be sure if the master cylinder is bad or the booster?

Sit in your car, pump the pedal and see if it becomes stiff, usually 5 or 6 pumps. Keep your foot on the brake pedal as you start the engine, if your foot and pedal drops down the booster is ok. If you can't get a good pedal with the van off, check the master cylinder.
