curious what a timing belt replacement should cost. On this model is it common to have additional engine damage like valves?

My daughter was told they needed a new engine, I don't quite understand why a timing belt failure would cause that.

I don't believe there is valve interfearance on this model. Belt replacement should be around 400.00
