If container is empty or broken, will it cause a Check Engine light to come on?

Nope. But you need to take your vehicle to an Autozone or CSK/O'Reilly and have them scan the PCM. They will do it for free. Then, get back with us withe the actual code(s) and description. Do not buy any parts from them just yet until you hear back from us.
