Help!
Looking for a cheap, quick way to extend the life of a high mileage van for a few more months.

Family van suddenly started dieseling a few days ago, took it to the shop, thought perhaps it needed a new timing belt? Instead, they basically recommend we put in another engine. Said they could instead start doing lesser repairs (such as valve job, new head gasket, etc.), but that repairing the top half of the engine would just lead to pressure problems in the bottom half and we would then need to do extensive repairs there.

From my youth, I seem to recall there are additives that you can put into the engine to seal up some leaks as a temporary (several months) measure, don't recall what these might be, or if they would be appropriate to try in this instance.

It's just a bummer that it was running fine, and then needs a new engine overnight.
