The engine has developed a loud metal hitting metal noise and it sounds like its coming from the rear valve cover. No smoke and car is running fine except for the engine noise. Any idea what the diagnosis might be and if its repairable or is it liekly the engine needs to be replaced?

if the engine is not misfiring i would remove the rear valve cover and see if maybe a valve spring may have broken.
