1998 Dodge Caravan Kick- down gear

Last time driving into the mountains, the transmission got stuck into kick-down gear. Why? This is not a problem with other normal, city, highway driving. The tranny has had regular services.

When you say stuck does it stay in second gear while you going up a steep grade then upshift to drive when road levels out?

It stayed in kick-down gear for many miles. I then pulled over, turned it off and let it cool down.
It was fine for a while until going up another mountain, then the same thing. It did not level out nor up shift.
